2013 Soul of a Lion Magnum
Joseph Daou lived a remarkable life, and through it all he exhibited the strength and courage of a lion. Before he passed away, he visited DAOU Mountain. While overlooking the new vineyard, he listened his sons’ winemaking dream and gave them his blessing. Soul of A Lion is a testament to that moment. It is a wine of power, complexity and imagination, and a fitting tribute to the man and the father.

The 2013 DAOU Estate Soul of a Lion shows beautiful depth of color. The black velvety core leads to aromas of early spring violets, crushed blueberries, and shaved chocolate. The palate is seductively balanced by the unique tartness of black raspberries and concentrated floral complexity of crème de cassis. Nuanced vanilla bean, cedar forest floor, and spiced tobacco round out the spectrum flavors. Integrated tannins, bright acidity, and moderate alcohol naturally extend into a seamless finish that lingers on the senses. Made from maturing vines, this wine showcases the best of DAOU Mountain terroir.
The 2013 vintage was one of the driest years on record. The lack of water caused early bud break, as well as smaller clusters and berries known for making wines with intense flavors and concentrated dark fruit. An unexpected storm brought relief in May and allowed our soils to retain some moisture for the warm summer months. Overall, the temperatures during the growing season were ideal with August bringing temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. These cooler temperatures allowed plenty of hang time on the vine for the grapes to fully mature. Harvest began on September 10th and ended October 4th, giving DAOU Mountain a blockbuster 2013 vintage. All the elements came together to make “once-in-a-lifetime” wines with integrated tannins and silky structure that will withhold substantial aging.
